The idea for Conservatory arose from a period of research, developing a project for an exhibition at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute, Scotland in 2003. The small fragments are pieces of an entire human skeleton cast in porcelain then smashed and artificially weathered to resemble similar pieces of china collected from the seashore. There is a very faint red pattern running through the piece which of an indigenous seaweed copied from a botanical engraving in the archive of the stately home. The piece was produced in collaboration with CRAFT Centre de Recherche sur les Arts du Feu et de la Terre, a ceramic research centre in Limoges, France.
